Soccer Fans and Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square) in Amsterdam

Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square) is a small square in central Amsterdam featuring a statue of Rembrandt (der, who else?) surrounded by the Night Watch from one of his most well-known paintings. One of the Night Watch kindly agreed to pose for a pic with me.

On the particular day I was there, the square was filled with happy soccer (football) fans doing some pre-game celebrations for the match that evening between Ajax and Manchester United. I had to root for Manchester U since my son is a huge fan and since this was right after the terrible terrorist attack in that city. But I kept that to myself, figuring it wiser not to broadcast that I was rooting for the other side. 🙂

I love watching happy soccer fans, their chants and songs and various ways of showing team spirit. I really got a kick out of hearing a bunch of Dutch soccer fans singing Sweet Caroline – turns out, this is a pretty universal party song.
