Strasbourg, France

I’m spending the next couple of days in Strasbourg in eastern France before heading to Rust, Germany just over the border for a conference. This is the first time I’ve been here and my initial impressions are that this city is full of quaint charm and friendly people. The neighborhood we’re staying in has a mix of the small, twisty-turny cobblestone lanes common in many European cities, sidewalk and underground cafés, small shops lining the main avenues, and a definite Bavarian influence in some of the architecture. Looking forward to getting my pain au chocolat fix at the local pâtisserie in the morning.

After a very long day of travel, my teammate and I arrived at our airbnb and then ventured out for dinner. We turned a corner and found this beauty. It’s the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg (aka, the Strasbourg Cathedral). It was originally built in 1015 and later destroyed by fire. The present cathedral was completed in 1284. The spire was added in 1439 and was the tallest in Christendom for four centuries. The detail and artistry are incredible, especially how well-preserved they are. And who doesn’t love flying buttresses? 🙂

Isn’t it gorgeous?
