Are We All Doomed to Turn Into Chatheads?

So, I was watching TV over the weekend when this ad came on for the new HTC One smartphone (the phone’s apparent sole claim to fame is being the first smartphone to offer Facebook Home).

Am I the only one who is disgusted by this commercial? Maybe that’s too strong of a word – maybe I’m more dismayed. I’m not sure what’s worse – the way that the woman in this commercial completely and gleefully tunes out what’s happening around her and the person she’s with in favor of a hunk of plastic that displays meaningless minutia or that the commercial portrays this as somehow a positive and fun thing that we should all do.

Speaking of Facebook Home, who came up with “chatheads”? I can totally see “chathead” turning into slang for people who can’t get their nose out of their phone, as in “Did you see that girl facebooking through the entire museum? Man, what a chathead!” In fact, chathead might turn out to be one of my new favorite words.

Next items to go on display in a history museum: our attention span, our ability to live in the moment, and our interest in something other than our phones…like, um, actually being with other people. Moral of the story: don’t be a chathead.
